So last night I got to go see a local MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) event. It was Island Fights 28. Now I went with low expectations simply because I have been to one local MMA event before and it was fun but less than stellar. It was a long time ago and a different organization.
This event last night was very much a pleasant surprise. There were quite a few fights. Although, when the announcer says a "five minute intermission" it means 15 to 20 minutes and the sound set up was pretty bad. Now that being said... those couple of minor things took very little away from the entertainment value.
It seems that even local shows have a very solid talent pool to draw from so there were solid fights pretty much all night. Just what you hope to see if you are a MMA fan. Submissions, knockouts, TKOs, were all on display. Another testament to the continued growth of MMA.
Good sportsmanship was on display after just about every fight I saw. The ring announcer did a good job given the poor mike quality. All said and done it was a great time and pretty well put together.
Now last night was free for me as a friend of mine had an extra ticket (much gratitude to you, brother) but I would have felt like I had gotten my monies worth even if I would have paid for a ticket.
One addition that I would like to see would be spotters on the outside of the ring to negate rope grabbing. Even if it is unintentional by the fighter it is still very frustrating to fans and the guy trapped in the corner/against the ropes with no way to reverse position.
So big props and much respect to, first and foremost, the fighters as well as Island Fights and Square Ring Promotions who put together a great show.
glad you had fun, and glad it was a quality show!
