Random local MMA event post

So last night I got to go see a local MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) event. It was Island Fights 28. Now I went with low expectations simply because I have been to one local MMA event before and it was fun but less than stellar. It was a long time ago and a different organization.

This event last night was very much a pleasant surprise. There were quite a few fights. Although, when the announcer says a "five minute intermission" it means 15 to 20 minutes and the sound set up was pretty bad. Now that being said... those couple of minor things took very little away from the entertainment value.

It seems that even local shows have a very solid talent pool to draw from so there were solid fights pretty much all night. Just what you hope to see if you are a MMA fan. Submissions, knockouts, TKOs, were all on display. Another testament to the continued growth of MMA.

Good sportsmanship was on display after just about every fight I saw. The ring announcer did a good job given the poor mike quality. All said and done it was a great time and pretty well put together.

Now last night was free for me as a friend of mine had an extra ticket (much gratitude to you, brother) but I would have felt like I had gotten my monies worth even if I would have paid for a ticket.

One addition that I would like to see would be spotters on the outside of the ring to negate rope grabbing. Even if it is unintentional by the fighter it is still very frustrating to fans and the guy trapped in the corner/against the ropes with no way to reverse position.

So big props and much respect to, first and foremost, the fighters as well as Island Fights and Square Ring Promotions who put together a great show.

Quote time

I am feeling a bit generous today so I thought I would give you a two for one special :)

You’ll never find a better sparring partner than adversity. – Walt Schmidt

There is no education like adversity. – Benjamin Disraeli

Two quotes but both with the same underlying principle. Education and sparring are not really that different, except that one may increase your IQ while the other may decrease it lol. The thing is that neither of them are easy but they both strengthen you. Sometimes life is just hard. It can go from paradise to suckville in nothing flat. When it does that you have to remember that life has a flow and a movement that is simply not determined by you. If you think life will fit into your neat little day planner you will be rudely awakened by something. So whatever you have that is kicking your teeth in (money, health, work, spouse, natural disaster, etc.) remember that it will pass and try to find a positive takeaway, no matter how small it may seem, from it.
